Burro racing at Magdalena’s Frontier Festival Weekend
MAGDALENA, NM –– New Mexico Pack Burros is thrilled to announce the “Frontier Festival Weekend with Tumbleweeds,” a three-day celebration offering a diverse range of activities from June 27-29, 2025. This unique weekend promises an immersive experience for all ages, blending relaxation, art, and thrilling local traditions.

The festivities kick off on Friday, June 27, with a Sunset Sound Bath at 7 PM at the Tumbleweeds outdoor picnic area. Hosted by House of Aurora Nourishing Embers, this tranquil evening will feature soothing sounds and optional Tarot Readings by Ruth Blomquist. This event is donation-based, encouraging attendees to pay what they can, and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or a mat for comfort.
Saturday, June 28, brings a step back in time with Tin Type Photos from 11 AM to 7 PM, also at Tumbleweeds. The Taos Tin Type Photo Studio will be on-site offering old-timey wet plate photography, providing a unique keepsake. Walk-ups are welcome, or individuals can book ahead online at www.taostintype.com.

The weekend culminates on Sunday, June 29, with the highly anticipated Magdalena Burro Stampede at 9 AM at the Magdalena Rodeo Grounds. This exciting event is hosted by NM Pack Burros, Tumbleweeds, and the Village of Magdalena. Spectators are welcome to witness a thrilling burro race featuring over 50+ teams running 3-mile and 9-mile courses. Race Course
3 Mile (short) course: This is a great walk, hike, or run loop that gently rolls around the north side of the village. The elevation gain for the full three miles is less than 120ft. Expect a combination of gravel road and dirt two track. Passes the historic Magdalena Cemetery. No aid stations, bring your own water. The courses will be well marked with flags and signage.
9 Mile (long) course: A epic loop that tours the landscape outside Magdalena. Amazing views of the Magdalena Mountains and Kelly Mining area. The elevation gain for the full nine miles is about 500 feet, most from a few rolling hills. This is approximately 50% desert two track and 50% gravel road. Some sandy sections. The last two miles are on gravel road- so expect a fast finish. One water only aid station at about mile seven.
