Socorro County volleyball features frontrunners & contenders

When it comes to making it to the 2025 state volleyball tournament, all three Socorro County varsity teams will be looking at taking different paths through their respective districts.

Lyndy Torres’ second season has Alamo Navajo poised for a third district title in four years.

Alamo Navajo
In her first season, coach Lyndy Torres led Alamo Navajo to an 11-11 record and a 6-2 District 3-1A. This year, the Lady Cougars are off to a county-best 8-3 record, and they are the frontrunners headed into league play.
Things won’t be easy for Alamo with a 10-game league slate, but the Lady Cougars have already posted wins over Carrizozo and Mountainair in the regular season.
Torres is fielding two seniors and two juniors, which means she needs leadership and quick maturity from her seven underclassmen, which includes two freshmen. Those are the things that will be required because Alamo will have a target on its back in its five road games.

Magdalena’s Micheon Shellhorn’s third season at the helm of the Steers volleyball program has produced an 8-4 start.

Magdalena
Coach Micheon Shellhorn is in her third season and earlier this year said her program is on track. The seniors lead. There’s power throughout the front line, and the Steers’ backside pulls out digs better than gophers.
In short, Magdalena can make a playoff run, but it will need to contend with Quemado (8-1) in District 2-1A action. The Steers are 8-4, and Reserve has a matching record. District play is as much about winning a title as it is sharpening the Steers’ horns for the postseason.
While Animas is 4-8 on the year, it is hard to play in the Lady Panthers’ lair after the four-hour trip it takes to get there from Magdalena—a trap the Steers want to avoid.

Socorro’s Carmen Marquez in her first season and she’s kept a smile on her face while her 1-11 Lady Warriors work toward winning.

Socorro
Coach Carmen Marquez’s first year has been rough, with a 1-11 start, and right now it’s about teaching the Socorro Lady Warriors how to win. Socorro has all the tools, and it has put together some remarkable scoring runs when playing in sync.
The best news this late in the season for the Lady Warriors is that Socorro still has five games before District 3-3A fires up. Socorro can easily pick up a couple of wins while also playing teams like Quemado and Oak Grove Classical Academy to strengthen its skills.
The Lady Warriors’ reward for entering league play is facing off against top-10 teams, such as No. 2 Cobre and No. 8 Hot Springs. Socorro will look to sneak up on the team on the road while also establishing a winning mark at home.
