STATE GOLF CHAMPIONS! The Socorro Lady Warriors ar

STATE GOLF CHAMPIONS! The Socorro Lady Warriors are the 2025 State 1-3A Golf Champions as freshman Abbegail Munguia and junior Natasha Apodoca tied for the lowest individual two-day scores of 162. Socorro turned a 46-stroke lead into a smashing 116-stroke victory over second-place Gateway Christian at the Riverside Golf Course in Farmington today.
It was a breakout weekend for Munguia, who shot an 81 on Monday and followed it up with another 81 on Tuesday. Apodaca had the lowest round on Day 2, a 79, and was sitting in third place after her Day 1 score of 83.
Socorro had victory in hand as it awaited its final golfer and only senior Ariana Crespin to finish her final hole before the victory celebration began. Already in the clubhouse was 4th place finisher Kailyn Woods (179), and Crespin’s 187 total was 7th.
Freshman Avery Timmons’ 198 total was a 7th-place finish for coach Kristen Griego’s team. @socorroschools @socorrowarriorgolf

VOLLEYBALL SEASON! Championships are won in the offseason, and Socorro High School's new head volleyball coach Carmen Marquez isn't playing around. The two-year assistant is taking over the reins of the Lady Warriors' volleyball program and the first practice of the 2025 season is eight days away!

Socorro’s Lady Warriors are in a great position

Socorro’s Lady Warriors are in a great position to claim the girls 1A-3A state golf championship with Abbegail Munguia’s first-round score of 81 leading a charge of five players in the top nine at Riverview Golf Club in Farmington on Monday.

Natasha Apodaca is tied for second with an 83, and Kailyn Woods is 4th with a score of 89. Ariana Crespin’s 91 has her in 8th place, and Avery Timmons is 9th with a 93.

Socorro (345) has a 46-stroke lead over Gateway Christian (391), which is currently second. Texico (406) is in third place.

It’s a super tight race in the boys competition, with seven strokes separating first through fourth place where the Socorro Warriors currently sit. Mesilla Valley leads the pack with a 321 score, NMMI is second with a 324, and St. Michael’s is at 327 to Socorro’s 328.

Isaiah Silva’s even par 72 left him in third place after the first day. He trails Mason Hicks (NMMI 68) and Troy Oswald (Gateway Christian 71). Andrew Handrich is in eighth place with a 77.

Tavin Benavidez is in 22nd after shooting a 89, and Ian Gonzales and Nazario Silva are tied in the 24th spot after scores of 89.

CAREER DAY! Socorro’s Cottonwood Valley Charter School held its second annual Career Fair on Thursday. The event allowed students to learn about a number of career options.
Coordinated by counselor Francis Fuller, the event was a chance for students to go hands-on with plumbing tools, get an up-close look at the human spine, and see the latest in robotics. @apoxpress

RISE: A PILOT PROGRAM! The Socorro County Detentio

RISE: A PILOT PROGRAM! The Socorro County Detention Center’s RISE welding program held its second graduation and certified four new welders on May 8. Despite a skeptical start, the program had its first graduating class in September of last year and is now recognized as the state’s pilot program.
During the graduation ceremony and short speeches by welding CTE instructor Kenny Gonzales, Eddie Garcia, the Socorro County detention administrator, and school board member Dave Hick it was evident the program does more than teach welding.
The graduates have developed strong emotional bonds that have come about from the encouragement being offered.
While he was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, Socorro County Manager Andy Lotrich helped bring about the program when Garcia and Hicks approached him about the idea.
At least seven other New Mexico counties are following suit and they have patterned their programs after the one in Socorro County.

AMAZING KICK! Alamo Navajo's Ania Torres is just an 8th grader, but she's already got an amazing next level kick when it comes to finishing a race. Setting in 8th place after the first lap of her Class A New Mexico State Track and Field Meet 800-meter race, Torres weaved her way through the field, grinding into 2nd place and just missing first with a clocking of 2:32.99. Torres also picked up medals in the 1,600 meters (6th) and 400 meters (4th). @positive.outcomes
