NM Tech hosting STEM camp June 9-13

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) is excited to announce its upcoming Summer STEM Camp, “Materials Engineering: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers & Composites,” hosted by the Materials & Metallurgical Engineering Department. This immersive program, designed exclusively for high school students, offers a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of materials science through practical, hands-on activities.
The first session of the MTLS Engineering Summer STEM Program 2025 will run from June 9-13, 2025. Participants will engage directly with the fundamental science behind the materials that shape our world, gaining invaluable experience in a university setting.
Led by experienced instructors Margaret Showalter and Professor David Burleigh, the camp curriculum is packed with engaging experiments and projects. Students will have the chance to cast metal, create molds, design their own glass jewelry, and even participate in controlled “breaking stuff on purpose” activities, such as fracturing concrete samples, to understand material properties. These activities are designed to spark curiosity and provide a tangible understanding of engineering principles.
The camp will be hosted at the New Mexico Tech campus in Socorro, providing students with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a glimpse into college life.
