Socorro High School’s David Gutierrez Jr. won his third consecutive state Class 4A heavyweight title and Isiah Estrada repeated for a second time as the Warriors took fourth place at the New Mexico National Guard State Wrestling Championships at the Rio Ranco Events Center on Saturday.
The duo led a charge of medalists that also included Patrick Ware Moya with a fourth place and a fifth place by Kadeyn McNeil.
Estrada’s match in the 121-pound weight class was a fully drawn out battle as he beat Belen’s Joshua Jaramillo 6-4 while Gutierrez powered his way to a pin at the 1:48 mark. Gutierrez then celebrated his victory by throwing a wrestling coach like he did his father, David Gutierrez Sr. when he won his first. Then last year, coach Joel Partridge took the ride and this year it was coach James McNeil who felt the thunder.
