STATE GOLF: Lady Warriors first after day one

Socorro’s Lady Warriors are in a great position to claim the girls 1A-3A state golf championship with Abbegail Munguia’s first-round score of 81 leading a charge of five players in the top nine at Riverview Golf Club in Farmington on Monday.
Natasha Apodaca is tied for second with an 83, and Kailyn Woods is 4th with a score of 89. Ariana Crespin’s 91 has her in 8th place, and Avery Timmons is 9th with a 93.
Socorro (345) has a 46-stroke lead over Gateway Christian (391), which is currently second. Texico (406) is in third place.

It’s a super tight race in the boys competition, with seven strokes separating first through fourth place where the Socorro Warriors currently sit. Mesilla Valley leads the pack with a 321 score, NMMI is second with a 324, and St. Michael’s is at 327 to Socorro’s 328.
Isaiah Silva’s even par 72 left him in third place after the first day. He trails Mason Hicks (NMMI 68) and Troy Oswald (Gateway Christian 71). Andrew Handrich is in eighth place with a 77.
Tavin Benavidez is in 22nd after shooting a 89, and Ian Gonzales and Nazario Silva are tied in the 24th spot after scores of 89.
